Burger Challenge at Moots in Kahoots and the Naked Bike Cafe | Geeveston, Tasmania

It has been far too long between burgers, and boy have we got a treat for you today. Not one, but two burger challenge reviews in one day! I won’t tell you the second venue, as I want to keep it a surprise until later in the day, but let’s just say that we may well have sold our souls for the opportunity to try this new concept in burger consumption!

Our recent long weekend spent in the far south of Tasmania provided us with the perfect opportunity to get along to what I think is the best-named cafe in Australia – Moots in Kahoots and The Naked Bike Cafe!

Dogs, bikes and burgers. Bikes might be a totally foreign passion to us both, but we’ll happily overlook that point if there’s any opportunity for a tasty burger and a couple of doges to play with!

It was a gorgeous weekend in the Huon and dozens of motorbike enthusiasts, ranging from the solo to the swarm, had descended on Geeveston to enjoy the surrounds and one last leisurely ride before summer closed its door.

Sadly, there were no puppies on offer the day we arrived, and I suspect it’s my over active imagination that ever suggested otherwise, but amongst a plethora of options, there were burgers aplenty!

Ranging from vego, chicken breast and pulled pork all the way through to a whopping 180g beef patty, there’s something here to suit all tastes.

While I was salivating for a ‘P-Plater’ 120g beef burger ($12), Karen was channelling her inner Speedy Gonzalez in selecting one of the numerous specials, the fish tacos ($15)!

The presentation couldn’t be faulted, but unfortunately the flavours didn’t quite reach the same heights. The patty was great, but to my palate did seem to lack pepper. On the other hand, the house made sauce they drizzle over the burger was a real zinger and tied the ingredients together really well. The bacon was far too undercooked for my liking (I do like a bit of crunch in the rind!) and the cheese selection didn’t inspire (perhaps if it had been grilled/melted it would have given it a lift?).

Overall a solid effort that, while flavoursome, fell a little bit short of some of the other burgers on offer around Tasmania.

However, as seems to happen with regular monotony, Karen again made the pick of the day in her fish tacos. The two fillets were incredibly well cooked and the batter light and fluffy. Combined with the crunchy acidity of the cabbage, the spicy sauce and soothing sour cream, every mouthful was a Mexican fish fiesta!

If the tacos are anything to go by, I’d love to return one day and try a few other dishes on their menu.

They’ve also got a pretty decent dessert selection on offer, of which we partook in a very nice mud cake. We’ve had some exceedingly dense mud cakes in the past, however this was anything but. The perfect finish to our lunch!

Overall thoughts on Moots in Kahoots?

The deep south of Tasmania is fast growing as a destination for gastronomes. Geeveston is already home to what many consider to be some of the best sushi in Australia at Masaaki’sHome Hill and The Cat’s Tongue Chocolatiers offer fantastic options around Huonville, and even Dover sports a great little restaurant, Post Office 6895, that punches far above its weight and deserves a lot more attention than it currently receives, particularly if you enjoy a good pizza!

Moots in Kahoots at The Naked Bike Cafe adds to the eclectic mix, providing a unique destination for any daytrippers whatever your mode of transport, be it car, bike or even Mexican swamp donkey!

The service was friendly, with plenty of smiles on offer. The menu is diverse and covers all bases admirably, including some very interesting breakfast options, again with a Mexican twist. There’s also a great range of burgers on offer that is sure to soothe even the hangriest beast within!
